Client Rights

Women’s Health and Equality Queensland (WHEQ) believes in the inherent human rights of all participants. We are committed to upholding these rights, ensuring that WHEQ participants are made aware of their rights, and know how to exercise their rights.

WHEQ Participants have the right to:

Receive information about your rights

Participants have the right to information about their rights both verbally and/or in written form. These should be provided in the initial stages of engagement in a service or program provided by WHEQ. These can be provided in another language if required.

Dignity and Respect

Participants have a right to be treated fairly and respectfully by WHEQ staff, in a manner that is free from discrimination and will receive a sensitive and ethical service that meets best practice standards (regardless of status, sexuality, ability, ethnicity, spirituality, or political beliefs).


Participants have the right to communicate with WHEQ staff in a form and language which makes information accessible to them. This includes the right to receive the services of an interpreter (including Auslan) if required. Participants have the right to receive health information by registered health and allied health care professionals. To know the name, qualifications and professional status of their midwife, counsellor, group facilitator, and to be offered an appointment time convenient to both the client and the worker.


Participants have the right to request and deny services offered and are encouraged to take responsibility for their own health, counselling, and healing process and to receive encouragement to do so. Should a Participant wish to have a support person attend and/or support them this will be considered and respected by WHEQ staff.

Informed Consent

Participants of the service have the right to request and receive information about health care, services, and their safety. To consent or not consent to participate in research or receive services from students.

Confidentiality and Privacy

WHEQ always aims to assure Participants of confidentiality, within legal and ethical practice guidelines. WHEQ staff will outline privacy and confidentiality practise to Participants and can discuss further at anytime at request. As a Participant you can choose to remain anonymous or use a pseudonym (allis) if you do not wish to use you own name. There are times in which information may need to be shared. The participant has a right to know the limitations on confidentiality at WHEQ. The limitations will be explained by a WHEQ staff member interacting with Participants.


Participants have the right to gain access to their counselling file in the presence of the WHEQ support person the Participant is seeing and to have their comments recorded upon request.


Participants have the right to request, decline and participate in the referral processes. This includes the right to request an alternative worker or service to meet individual needs.

Provide feedback including complements and complaints

Participants have the right to comment on or complain about the service without reprisal and to have that complaint dealt with promptly and fairly . All feedback and complaints can be given anonymously. Participants can make a complaint about any concerns or grievance they may have and to have their complaint dealt with fairly, promptly, and confidentially.


Participants have the right to be informed of management plans regarding WHEQ services affecting them and be given the opportunity to accept or reject planned approaches. It is the Participants right to consent or not consent to participate in auditing, surveys or research projects.
